License

Neoma comes in two editions, licensed differently.

The open-source edition

The Neoma web app is free and open-source software, released under the GNU Affero General Public License, version 3.0 or later (AGPL-3.0-or-later).

You are free to:

• Use it for any purpose, personal or commercial, at no cost.
• Study how it works, the complete source code is public.
• Share it with anyone.
• Modify it and distribute your changes.

In return, the AGPL asks that:

• If you distribute it (modified or not), you keep it under the AGPL and make the corresponding source code available.
• If you run a modified version as a network service, you must offer that service's users the modified source code as well.
• You preserve the existing copyright and license notices.

The App Store and desktop editions

The apps distributed through the Apple App Store, the Mac App Store, and as signed desktop installers are proprietary. Their source is not public.

Your use of those apps is governed by the End User License Agreement, and by the terms of the store you obtained the app from.

Why the difference?

Copyleft licenses like the AGPL cannot lawfully be distributed through the App Store. The AGPL forbids imposing additional restrictions on the people who receive the software, and Apple's terms impose several, notably limits on how many devices a copy may be installed on. This is not a technicality: VLC was removed from the App Store in 2011 for exactly this reason.

Rather than drop the open-source edition, Neoma is dual-licensed. Because Neoma has a single author, that author can offer the same work under the AGPL to everyone and under proprietary terms to the app stores. Both editions are genuine. The open one isn't a crippled demo, and the store one isn't a different program.

What doesn't change

Neither license affects your notes. They are plain Markdown files on your own device, they are yours, and they stay readable in any text editor. No edition of Neoma collects, transmits or has access to them. See the Privacy Policy.

Attribution

Both editions include third-party open-source components CodeMirror, KaTeX, pdf.js, React, Lucide and others, each under its own permissive license. Full attributions ship with the applications.

Neoma's name, logo and branding are not covered by any of these licenses and are not licensed for reuse.

There is no warranty, the software is provided "as is" (see the Terms of Use).
